Description
Early 20th Century ”Mermaid’ vase by Royal Dux, Czechoslovakia (Bohemia). This stunning piece is typical of the Art Nouveau era. The Royal Dux factory was famous for producing mythical ocean beings combined with natural elements.
The mermaid is stretched out along the front of a large conch shell the inside of which would serve as a vase. There are some rust marks to the interior of the shell section from use of the old metal cages for flower arrangements. Unfortunately, the oasis used nowadays for flower arrangements was only invented in the 1950’s. There is also a very small ”ding’ to the right hand top section of the shell (see the last photo). Despite this, it does not in any way detract from the beauty of this piece.
The vase measures 29cm in length x 22cm in height. The width is approximately 20cm.
The base has the maker’s identifying pink ”Royal Dux Bohemia” impressed into the triangle with the letter E at the bottom centre. It also carries the number 15. engraved alongside.
A terrific piece for Royal Dux collectors.
